“Peacocking” - a colloquial term describing the natural tendency to flaunt one’s strong points in order to be noticed or stand out from the rest.
This project, or “The Peacock House” as we would like to call it, is a major renovation of a 90’s built residence in Alabang Hills, Muntinlupa City, Metro Manila, Philippines. We named it so after the owners expressed concern about removing the existing peacock glass in the frontage of the house, as feng shui suggests that this depiction of the bird helps the house fight bad luck given its geographical location. We embraced the challenge of giving the house a contemporary look while being faithful to its robust structure and retaining the spirit of the confident bird.
This new design of the house retains its existing gable roof shape, but adorns it with a Modern Scandinavian exterior to allow the house confidently “stand out” on its own from the style of the other houses inside the village. Large wood battens highlight the facade together with glass windows that allow natural light and ventilation. Exterior cladding with a tropical twist add depth and character to the design concept. Aside from this fresh artistic interpretation, the house will contain artworks, sculptures and wall patterns inspired by the resilient fowl – not only to enhance its fundamental design concept but also to promote prosperity throughout its spaces. And no, we won’t blame you if you thought the façade evokes images of the peacock’s head.
